ABOUT
The Central Library at Chettinad Dental College & Research Institute has an imposing infrastructure covering an area of 12,000 sq. ft and is well- stocked with the recommended text books, reference books (both Indian and International), journals, theses, magazines and audiovisual resources. The Library is equipped with an all-inclusive collection of books related medicine, allied health sciences, and research. As per the contemporary requirements, a digital library with internet access, Medlar search facilities, media resource services, computerized database access and E- access are also available to access more than 600 e books, 410 e journals , 19054 e-thesis and dissertations and 4081 rare books and manuscripts which are available. We proudly state that the central library is automated with a Library Management Software developed in-house. An Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) has been created to effortlessly search for books. The research work of our doctoral and postgraduate students is on display in a separate section earmarked for the same. In addition to the Central Library all the health science departments are equipped with individual department libraries stocked with essential text books and reference books.

OBJECTIVES

3. Provide a curriculum-based, flexibly scheduled, open access learning environment that accommodates all learners.
4. Facilitate optimal use of knowledge by all staff and students.
5. Encourage and foster reading habit among staff and students.
6. Effectively participate in the teaching-learning programmes of the school.
7. To provide intellectual access to information through learning activities that are integrated into the curriculum and that help all students achieve information literacy by developing effective cognitive strategies for selecting, retrieving, analyzing, evaluating, synthesizing, creating, and communicating information in all formats and in all content areas of the curriculum.
LIBRARY HOURS
1. For the effective implementation of the above objectives the following guidelines have been introduced.
2. The time table reflects the mandatory weekly hour dedicated to the library by every department.
3. The Student attendance will be monitored for the library hours by biometric punching and the faculty accompanying them. This Policy can be revised from time to time to strengthen it with adequate changes to accommodate new resources and services and to cope with the ever expanding needs and expectations of the users.

    All the faculty & students shall access library only through the first floor library entrance available inside the college between 8.30am to 4.00pm on all working days.

GENERAL RULES

  • All the Faculty members and students should wear ID Card without fail. All Library transaction require ID card and it is non-transferable.
  • All the faculty members and students are requested to mark biometric attendance as well as to enter name and sign in the register placed at the entrance both during entry and exit.
  • All the faculty members and students should follow University prescribed dress code while visiting the library.
  • Bags, handbags and other personal belongings including mobile phones/ audio instruments with or without speaker or headphone will not be allowed inside the library and should be kept in the racks at the library entrance. Library is not responsible for any loss or damage.
  • Laptop alone can be used in the specific area provided in the library. Users have to register their name, accessories, time-in and time-out in the register kept in the counter. They have to take care of their lap-top and accessories. Library staffs are not responsible for any loss or damage.
  • All the faculty members & students should maintain silence and no discussion will be permitted inside the library.
  • All the faculty members & students are requested to handle all the library books/materials with care. Damaging the books, writing, scribbling, marking, cutting the pages etc., are strictly prohibited.
  • All the faculty & students are requested to take the initiative of notifying the librarian regarding defects found in books and bound volumes.
  • All the faculty members and students are requested to leave the books on the reading table while leaving the library.
  • All the faculty members & students are requested to show the books or other materials taken out of the library to the staff at the entrance counter without fail.
  • New arrival journals/books shall be intimated to all students and faculty members through group mail/SMS.
  • All the faculty members & students are requested to avoid taking several books and journal at once.

FOOD & CLEAN POLICY

  • No Refreshments shall be allowed inside the library premises.
  • Keep the library neat and clean. Through the waste in the dustbins placed in the library.

DIGITAL LIBRAY USAGE

  • Virtual Library should be used for LMS and educational purpose only.
  • Online journals/ e-books/ CDs/DVDs etc., can be accessed in the virtual library. However, No member is permitted to download /transmit the whole document.

PRINT AND XEROX

  • Photocopying section: Only selected pages from the books and articles from Journals are allowed for photocopying.
  • Photocopying of full books or Journals is not permitted.
  • Photocopying services are available between: 09.00 am and 06.00 pm.
  • Photocopying charges: Rs.1/- per page

BORROWING RULES

  • Circulation: The card holders should come personally to borrow the books, and authorization is not allowed. The borrower should verify the book condition before leaving the counter. The borrower is responsible for the book borrowed. Books will be issued subject to availability only. Reference books, magazines, newspapers will not be allowed for borrowing.
  • Borrowing Limit: Five Books are issued for fifteen days and may be renewed for further period of two weeks. Books should be physically presented at the counter for renewal. Absence from university shall not be accepted for delay in returning the books. No reminders will be issued to members, but the list of defaulters will be displayed in the university notice board.
  • Transaction Hours: Book issue transaction on cards will be made between 8.30 am and 10 pm on all working days of the library. No transaction will be made on Sundays and other declared holidays.
  • Damages to Books: For damage to the books Including scribbling, spots, tea stain on books, etc., fine will be collected at the time of return of the books. Serious damage affecting reading – requires replacement of the concerned books or compensation as per library rules. Besides the above compensation, the perpetrator should pay the processing fees of Rs. 100/- per book.
  • Loss of Books: Loss of borrowed books should be reported to the librarian immediately. The concerned student should replace the same, besides paying the fine.
  • Indian Books: The original price at the time of loss including processing fee of Rs. 100/-
  • Foreign Books: The original price at the time of loss including processing fee of Rs. 100/-
  • Books in whole set: once one of the volumes of a set is lost, borrower should replace the whole set including processing fee of Rs. 200/-
  • Overdue Charges: Rs. 5 per day / per book.
  • Librarian has the right to call back any book issued to anyone at any time and the same has to be returned without fail. The librarian shall have the power to refuse to issue any book to anyone infringing the rules.
  • Please note that violation of the library rules may lead to the withdrawal of the privilege of using the library facilities.

DONATION AND GIFTS

  • The Library accepts donation of books and manuscripts from alumni, donors, parents and guests. Donations once accepted will become the library property.

ELECTRONIC RESOURCE DETAILS

Electronic Resources from various consortium such as TN Dr. MGR University E-consortium, ProQuest, DELNET and Dental Council of India E-consortium My LOFT which can accessed anywhere in the campus using WIFI. We have total collection of         228 electronic books, 487 e-journals, 258 CDs/DVDs, AV resources and 8382 theses and dissertations. Apart from these we have general collection of electronic books, journals and magazines from various institutional memberships such as British council library, American library, National Digital Library (NDL) and Shodhganga – a reservoir of Indian theses.

SERVICES

Circulation service
Circulation services include assistance in borrowing/ returning/ renewal of borrowed books and other reading material. Library staffs are available to help you with your queries and to locate books and study aids.
Reference Service
Central Library has an impressive collection of text books and reference books (Encyclopedia, Handbooks, Manuals, Databanks for Competitive exams, expensive books), Project reports, Theses, Proceedings, Journals and Periodicals.
Electronic resources like CD/DVDs/ Audio cassettes and e-book/e-journals /theses/project reports also available in virtual library for reference.
Resource Sharing (Inter library Loan)
CARE has an institutional membership with DELNET, British Council library and American library, to provide printed books and electronic resources on an inter library loan, to provide an expanded access to both print and online literature search.
Virtual library
All online databases like ProQuest, DELNET, SCC online, Pharma Intelligence can be accessed through virtual library. Students can utilize this for project report preparation, paper preparation for conferences/seminars/assignments, OPAC search and all academic activities.
E-Learning facility & Online Database
The Virtual library is stocked with 182262 electronic books subscribed from ProQuest online databases specially for medical, allied health sciences, and nursing students and 505 electronic books from DELNET. SCC online and Pharma intelligence databases are available for Law and Pharmaceutical sciences All the computers have a Wi-Fi connection, for unhindered access to online resources.
Multimedia Resource Service
To enable students to attend/ access lectures delivered by distinguished faculty, video lectures / NPTEL online course videos /MOOCs (Massive online open access courses) head set, mike and web camera are provided.
NPTEL e-Learning Facility
Virtual library enables the students to access the video lectures of NPTEL, assignment submission and faculty interaction. Students can also attend these lectures using their own laptops.
Online Public Access Catalogue – OPAC
OPAC is useful to search and locate books and other resources availability in our library.
 
SMS alert service
SMS alerts directed to library users notify them about the new arrivals. Reminder messages are also sent to the users’ registered mobile numbers.
Library Management System(LMS)
Central Library operation a Library Management System developed in house by our own IT Team, and this is software is used for acquisition, circulation, report generation and stock verification.
Reprographics facility
Reprographic services like print, scanning and copying are available in the library at nominal charge.
Separate Reading rooms for Students and faculty members
Reading rooms with the perfect ambience have been separately earmarked for undergraduate and postgraduate students, research scholars and faculty.

Medical University, Chennai has started a Library e-Consortium connecting the Government and Private Medical, Dental, Pharmacy and Nursing institutions. The major goal of the Library consortia is to provide interactive information services to the faculties and students. Accessing information resources and services through one unified portal would help the affiliated institutions libraries to eliminate the overlap and duplication of resources and efforts, which would facilitate optimum methods for effectively and efficiently using the allocated resources.
